The International Conference on the Middle Ages results from a partnership established between the FCSH/NOVA Institute for Medieval Studies and the municipality of Castelo de Vide. Thus, the desires and effectiveness of a research center that articulates scientific research with its transfer to society and a chamber committed to sustained investing in culture, heritage preservation, and training came together.

The two institutions aimed to transform these meetings into an annual event, which became a forum for discussion of the great themes and problems of the Middle Ages between specialists from various scientific areas, namely history, archaeology, art history, and literature, among others.

In this way, the multidisciplinary brand that distinguishes IEM as the only Portuguese research unit exclusively dedicated to developing studies on this era is reinforced. The choice of Castelo de Vide to host the event allows researchers to immerse themselves in an environment conducive to reflection on the Middle Ages. It will contribute to boosting the attractiveness and heritage potential of this town and the cross-border region in which it is located.

This year, the International Conference on the Middle Ages will occur between the 3rd and 5th of October in Castelo de Vide. It will be dedicated to “Urban societies in Medieval Europe”.

The meeting languages are Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English.
