Unesco Chair

IEM - Institute of Medieval Studies is one of the members of the UNESCO Chair “The Ocean. Cultural Heritage”, attributed to NOVA University and directed by Professor João Paulo Oliveira e Costa. The Chair also counts on other NOVA FCSH research centres as partners: CHAM - Humanities Centre, IHC - Institute of Contemporary History and IELT - Institute of Literature and Tradition Studies. The Chair aim to build a deeper understanding of the ocean's heritage, maritime culture and community interaction, developing research and educational activities, the promotion of postgraduate studies, short courses, seminars and conferences, and enabling the exchange of students between the different institutions. The development of the project will take place through three lines of action: research, education and promote community sensibilisation. To this end, institutions from Portugal, Spain, Cape Verde, Colombia and Brazil, as well as the UNESCO National Commission, will pool efforts to achieve the objectives of this innovative and ambitious proposal.
