The online symposium “(Re)Thinking Medieval England”, to be held on 4 August 2026, and conducted entirely in Portuguese, aims to provide a forum for reflection and debate on the many dimensions of medieval England, fostering dialogue and discussion among researchers specialising in English Medieval Studies.
The symposium’s interdisciplinary perspective is reflected in the wide range of approaches and themes it seeks to explore. These include medieval English literature and culture in their broadest sense, as well as reflections on contemporary representations, fictionalisations, and reinterpretations of the medieval period across a variety of media and cultural forms, including video games, translation, and the reception of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. In doing so, the symposium seeks to provide a platform for critical dialogue on both emerging and established lines of research, encouraging academic collaboration and new ways of thinking about both the enduring presence and the continual reinvention of the medieval in the contemporary world.
