The nineteenth volume of the “Estudos” series, edited by Paulo Catarino Lopes, reinforces the strategy of disseminating scientific publications through publication as an e-book and under the Open Access regime.

Based on analysis of chronological, documentary, epistolary, iconographic and other sources, both Portuguese and international, this volume aims to provide a platform for reflection on the composition and description of European landscapes (human and physical) during the period of transition from the Respublica Christiana to a Europe conceived as the emerging scenario of national monarchies and great dynastic houses.

If, on the one hand, the purpose is to study how Portugal, in the 15th and 16th centuries, projected the European space, on the other hand, the aim is to identify the nature of the representations constructed between Portugal and Europe. Furthermore, we seek valid answers to central questions, such as the character and constancy of the relationships ongoing among the various European territories. The political and diplomatic, military and strategic contacts, religious, commercial and mercantile exchanges and the artistic circulation are placed at the centre of a multidisciplinary reflection. These are the main objectives of this volume, written by different authors, which aims to delve into the various exchanges that took place between Portugal and the different European spaces in the 15th and 16th centuries.
