The exhibition “Pão, carne e água: memórias de Lisboa Medieval” (Bread, meat and water: memories of medieval Lisbon) is opening on April 23rd. From then and until July 26th, there is the opportunity to visit this exhibition that sets out to convey to the public fundamental memories about our collective history, in particular of the city of Lisbon, regarding the food supply available during the Middle Ages.

Curated by Amélia Aguiar Andrade and Mário Farelo, this exhibition also aims to demonstrate the rich medieval heritage preserved by the Lisbon City Council while adopting bread, meat and water as the key features.

This exhibition includes several documents from the Municipal Archive as well as objects, images and documents from the Museum of Lisbon, São Jorge Castle/EGEAC, the Lisbon Archaeology Centre, the Metrology Museum, the Archivo Real y General de Navarra and the National Archive of Torre do Tombo and with other items loaned by the National Library of Spain, the National Library of Portugal, the National Museum of Ancient Art and the Leiden University Library.

In addition to the oldest rulings issued by Lisbon Council, the parchment recently acquired by the Portuguese State and deposited in this institution, which has made headlines in the newspapers for its particular journey, will also be on display in this exhibition.

This is an initiative organised by the Municipal Archive of Lisbon and the Institute of Medieval Studies, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University, which will go on display, with free entrance, in the Exhibition Room of the National Archive of Torre do Tombo between 24 April and 26 July 2019.

This exhibition will be inaugurated on 23rd April at 6pm and the occasion will include a guided tour by the scientific commissioners.

On May 30, the respective catalogue will be launched at the conference “Bread, meat and water. Memories of medieval Lisbon” that analyses these themes.
