After visiting Bath, Budapest, Florence, Prague and Warsaw, the Splendid Encounters conference series marks its sixth edition in Lisbon. IEM and CHAM are thus associated with the Premodern Diplomats Network, an international network of undisputed expression in the panorama of interdisciplinary studies on diplomacy, its practices and players.

For the first time embracing the pre-modern period, this edition of Splendid Encounters, the largest to date, has as its theme “Correspondence and Information Exchange in Diplomacy (1300-1750)”. As the gathering and transmission of information is one of the most present aspects in this formative period of diplomacy, and considering a range of agents far beyond the figure of the “ambassador,” the conference will have the thematic and geographic breadth necessary to reflect on diplomatic action, beyond the European complex, also within Asian, American, and African territories. Some of the world’s leading specialists – including guest speakers Isabella Lazzarini, Marie-Karine Schaub, and Louis Sicking – will contribute to the proceedings, alongside young researchers.
