Speaker: Delmira Espada Custódia

The Holford Hours, illuminated in the first half of the 16th century (1526), were executed in Flanders by Gerard Horenbout and Simon Bening. They are part of a series of works of great importance, characterized by collaboration between artists of equal merit and by the growing affirmation of the pictorial development of calendars and margins. In this session we intend to show their iconographic program, confronting it with the themes present in other contemporary manuscripts, the singularities of the text, and the introductory compositions of the main sections that make up the Book of Hours.

This session takes place as part of the cycle of seminars «Tesouros em Pergaminho – A coleção de manuscritos iluminados ocidentais de Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian» (Treasures in Parchment – The Western Illuminated Manuscript Collection of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian), the result of a partnership between Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM) of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University (NOVA FCSH).
