Registrations for the International Conference “Intervir na Memória. Restauros de época moderna em monumentos funerários medievais (sécs. XV-XX)” (Interventions in Memory. Modern Era Restorations of Medieval Funerary Monuments (15th-20th centuries)), taking place at the Faculdade de Belas Arts of Lisbon, from 25 to 26 September 2019, are open. 

The Colloquium will focus on interventions made in relation to certain medieval funerary projects during the modern era, assessing the impact of those actions both on the materiality of tombs and on the interpretations they have prompted. This analysis may include interventions of different kinds, from restorations to dislocations/decontextualizations. 

The programme includes 3 sessions of invited specialists and 2 posters’ sessions, but also a visit to the former convent of Saint Francis of Lisbon, the opening of the exhibition Contemporary Interventions in Memory: Dialogues and Silence (gathering the works of students from the Faculty of Fine Arts, inspired by the subject of the Colloquium), the exhibition of the work A (im)permanência do gesto / The (Im)permanence of the Gesture, 2018, vídeo, 26’40’’, by Manuel Botelho, and the presentation of the volume Almas de Pedra. Escultura Tumular: da Criação à Musealização | Souls of Stone. Funerary Sculpture: from Creation to Musealization. Eds. Giulia Rossi Vairo, Joana Ramôa Melo, Maria João Vilhena de Carvalho. Lisboa: Instituto de Estudos Medievais NOVA FCSH, 2019. 

The Conference is organized by Institute of Medieval Studies and the Institute of Art History of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University, with the Centro de Investigação e Estudos em Belas Artes of the Faculdade de Belas Artes of University of Lisbon.
