Imagen, discurso y memoria de la práctica gótica en la catedral de Zamora
To complete the study of the sources, derivations and models from the Zamora body and the role of the bishops of Zamora in the Hispano-Portuguese diplomatic relations ongoing in the second half of the 15th century.
Objectives:
Consult the bibliographic and documental collection, fieldwork to study in depth the relationships between the Late Gothic and Manueline Hispanic art.
Study the religious, political, social and artistic relationships among the bishops of the diocese interconnected with the Portuguese demarcations.
Formal relationships between these and other expressions: circulation of promotors, artists and models.
Evaluate the role of Zamora in the Isabella war of succession, the Catholic and Portuguese heirs.
Evaluate the diplomatic participation of the bishops of Zamora in the relationships between Spain and Portugal throughout this period.
Examine in depth the artistic effects of cross-border movements in the period that saw the expulsion of Jews and Moors.
And on the artistic effects of the “New World” discoveries.
Estimate the political role of Portugal in the phase of decline arriving with the end of the Gothic period in Zamora (the Revolt of the Comuneros).
Enrich the knowledge on Hispano-Portuguese relationships as a factor in the developments of the iconographic program of the Late Gothic style in Zamora.
Biographic note
Graduated in History of Art and recipient of the Extraordinary Prize del Máster de Estudios Avanzados de Historia del Arte, from the University of Salamanca (USAL) (2015-2016), currently contracted as a Predoctoral Research Lecturer on a USAL grant in the Department of the History of Fine (2018-2021) under the supervision of Professor Lucía Lahoz. Her thesis project focuses especially on studying the Hispanic visual cultures of the 15th and 16th centuries and late Gothic art (2017-) based on the study produced at this level, the end of her Master’s Degree and the project developed following the awarding of a Lecturer Collaboration grant by CEMUSA-USAL (2016).

This study visit took place within the scope of a project coordinated as lead researcher “La interacción sociedad-medio ambiente en la cuenca del Guadalete en la Edad Media (GUADAMED)”, co-financed by the European Union, under the auspices of the FEDER 2014-2020 Operational Program and the Consejería de Economía, Conocimiento, Empresas and Universidad de la Junta de Andalucía (Project reference: 108201).
Biographic note
Enrique José Ruiz Pilares received his doctoral degree from the University of Cádiz (2017) and is a researcher at the PAIDI Medievalismo Gaditano Group (HUM 182) and the Agustín de Horozco de Historia Antigua y Medieval Seminar at the same university. His research centres on the political, social and economic history of cities in the Early Middle Ages, specifically in the territory making up the former kingdom of Seville. There is a particular interest in analysing the relationships of power and the interactions ongoing between societies and their surrounding environment through recourse to new technologies. Among his key publications, there stand out: “La estructura del poder de las élites andaluzas bajomedievales: familiares, amigos y vecinos. “Las Siete Partidas de Alfonso X el Sabio. Iluminación, iconografía y mecenazgo“
Biographic note
Jorge Prádanos Fernández graduated in History of Art from the University of Valladolid in 2015 and gained his Advanced Studies Master’s Degree in Spanish History of Art from UCM – Complutense University of Madrid in 2016. He is currently working on his doctoral degree thesis at UCM entitled ” A servicio de Dios y por comunal de todos hacemos este libro”. Analysing and contextualising the Siete Partidas illuminated manuscript under the supervision of Dr. Laura Fernández Fernández, which analyses illumination in the medieval manuscript production of Siete Partidas and the relationship with other parallel types of European icons. In 2018, he obtained a pre-doctoral contract, FPU17/01205 from the Ministry of Education. He has participated in national and international conferences interrelated with the study object of his thesis and published various works in monographs and specialist magazines. In 2017, he received a ERASMUS+ grant and spent April to June 2018 at EEHAR – the Spanish School of History and Archaeology in Rome. He is a member of the IUS ILLUMINATUM research group and recently completed a research internship at the Institute of Medieval Studies – NOVA University between April and June 2021 to work on the Portuguese Partidas manuscripts.
