aught by Professors Gonçalo Miguel da Silva and Filipa Roldão, the NOVA – FCSH summer school course, “Between the written and the lived: How to govern a medieval Portuguese city?” (25h), will take place between the 17th and 28th of July, at the following times:

  • July 17, 19, 21, 24 and 26 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm; from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm and from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm
  • July 28th from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm

Course objectives:

  • Acquire knowledge about the municipal institutions and officials of medieval Portuguese urban centres;
  • Recognize the main concerns and strategies of municipal power in the governance of medieval Portuguese towns and cities;
  • Identify the protagonists, spaces and mechanisms related to urban supply;
  • Identify the protagonists, spaces and mechanisms linked to the defense of urban health and peace;
  • Master methodologies for selection and analysis of medieval sources that enable the student to pursue more in-depth studies on this period or to prepare didactic materials for the school public.
