Between the 25th of June and the 8th of Julyarchaeological excavations are taking place as part of research projects carried out under protocols between the Municipality and the Universidades Nova de Lisboa and the Algarve.

The two sites under study are located in the parish of Ventosa. The oldest, the Seixosa mound, next to the village of Vila Nova, is a prehistoric tomb dating back around 5000 years, where objects that accompanied the dead were recovered, such as axes, knives and arrowheads made of stone. Nos Lameiros Tapados, located below Penoita, is a set of medieval houses used seasonally by shepherds and dates from around the 10th and 11th centuries.

Students and young researchers from those Universities and technicians from the City Council participate in these works.

On the 8th of July, an open day will be held for the excavation of Lameiros Tapados. The person responsible for the works will be available to guide the visit to the works in progress between 9 am and 12 pm.

Next September, these fieldworks will take place in two other archaeological sites located in the union and parishes of Cambra and Carvalhal de Vermilhas: the dolmen of Lapa da Meruje and the medieval site of Tapado das Casas.
