The Entail of the month of February is the Pindela Estate
The entailed lineage of Pindela, established on 12 May 1526 on Pindela Estate, by Luís de Carvalho and his wife, Beatriz de Almeida, illustrates the vicissitudes of the model of succession and vincular transmission over the centuries.
This “Entail of the Month” presents the entailed lineage of Pindela, established on 12 May 1526 on Pindela Estate, by Luís de Carvalho and his wife, Beatriz de Almeida.
In the absence of direct descendants, Luís de Carvalho and Beatriz de Almeida bound over their properties, bequeathing them to their nephews, Simão Pinheiro and Leonor de Almeida, on the condition that they marry. It would be the descendants of this couple, obliged to bear firstly the surname Pinheiro and then Figueira, who continued the administration of this estate, successively incorporating new goods and properties. Having overcome an attempt to usurp the lineage in the mid-17th century, the House of Pindela subsequently established itself as an active centre in the Portuguese cultural and political panorama throughout the following centuries.
This estate is notable for having already been established prior to the period of the Dutch occupation of the Capitanias do Norte (1630-1654), before a Portuguese notary, which suggests the Dutch maintained a certain recognition of Portuguese institutions and normative order.
