GIHM organises the annual Workshop on Medieval Studies (WEM), at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Oporto, which aims to bring together MA and PhD students in medieval studies from across Portuguese and international universities.

WEM, which is open to MA and PhD students in History, History of Art, Archaeology, Philosophy, Philology and Medieval Literature, provides a space for the discussion of ideas and the presentation of research projects (MA and PhD) within the framework of contributing to improving ongoing works. Candidates wishing to present the final results of their completed studies or are on the verge of completion will not be selected.

The 14th edition of this Workshop will take place on 7 and 8 April 2022, entirely face-to-face, at the Nobre Amphitheatre, the Faculty of Letters, the University of Oporto.

To apply, please submit the form available here by 31st December 2021.

The selection results will be released by 21st February 2022.

The applicants selected are then to deliver their papers, in accordance with the GIHM instructions, to gihmedieval@gmail.com by 25 March 2022.

The WEM sessions last for 45 minutes, broken down as follows: each participant receives 15 minutes to present their paper; this is then followed by comments from a colleague (5 minutes) and an expert on the topic (10 minutes); with the last 15 minutes reserved for the presentation of responses by the communicator and audience debate.

Each participant is also to read the text of another candidate and prepare comments of a scientific nature with a maximum duration of 5 minutes. The working languages are Portuguese, English or Spanish.

The research papers presented at the WEM are published in Incipit, a digital GIHM publication made available on the website of the Faculty of Letters Digital Library at the University of Oporto. The most recent edition is available here.
