The event takes place on 10 October 2019, at 9:45 am, at the Mouzinho da Silveira Cine-Theatre, in Castelo de Vide (Avenida da Aramenha). This session takes place within the framework of the 4th Castelo de Vide International Days of the Middle Ages, between 10th and 12th October. The book is presented by Prof. Maria Helena da Cruz Coelho from the University of Coimbra.

The book results from another initiative between Castelo de Vide Municipal Council and the Institute of Medieval Studies, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University (IEM-NOVA FCSH).

In this volume, twenty-eight researchers from Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands are responsible for the writing of twenty-two articles in response to the challenge the organizers set the scientific community in calling for reflections on a particularly pertinent theme in the medieval city as this has almost always been defined as a space closed by a wall that created on opposition between interior and exterior, materialising systems of inclusion and exclusion.

Deploying a plurality of languages that we are pleased to note – Portuguese, Spanish, French and English – these studies focus on a diversity of medieval political units that today form part of the historiographies of Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, with special emphasis on the different medieval Iberian kingdoms, and in the latter case the focus is not limited to Christianity as we also encounter reflections that focus on Peninsular Islam and/or its remnants.
