[CALL FOR PAPERS] – “Central Governments and the Resolution of Maritime Conflicts, 1200–1600”
Submissions by 15.06.2018
The Maritime Conflict Management in Atlantic Europe, 1200-1600 project, directed by Louis Sicking (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Universiteit Leiden) and funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, aims to study the various manifestations of maritime conflict resolution in Medieval Europe with the objective of contributing to answering roughly four questions: What role did maritime conflicts play in the development of diplomacy and international law in pre-modern Europe (1200-1600)? How did different political authorities negotiate and seek to resolve transnational maritime conflicts? How successful were their strategies? How did the victims of maritime conflicts claim and obtain compensation for the damages suffered?
This project is based at the Institute for History (Universiteit Leiden) and has as partner institutions the Institute for Medieval Studies, Environment and Societies (Université de La Rochelle), the Universidad de Cantabria, the Instituto de Estudios Medievales y Renacentistas (Universidad de la Laguna) and the Institute of Medieval Studies, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University (IEM-NOVA FCSH). The project therefore brings together Dutch, French, Spanish and Portuguese medievalists and counts on the participation of three members of the IEM-NOVA FCSH: Amélia Aguiar Andrade (Portuguese team coordinator), Flávio Miranda and Gonçalo Melo da Silva (also a member of the Dutch team).
