On the 175th anniversary of Alberto Sampaio’s birth, and after an interregnum of seven years, the award has been rehabilitated, with the aim of remembering the legacy of the historian and encouraging historical research, especially in the fields of economic and social history.

Established by the municipalities of Braga, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão and under the scientific supervision of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, the prize was awarded this year to a work on salt production and trade in Portugal, entitled “Lavrar o Mar: a dinâmica da produção de sal em Setúbal no contexto dos salgados portugueses. Etapas de uma afirmação internacional”, by Ana Cláudia Silveira, a researcher at the Institute of Medieval Studies of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon.

The public award ceremony will take place on December 1st in Guimarães, at the Sociedade Martins Sarmento, in the Salão Nobre, at 15:30.
