Carlos Filipe Afonso

Carlos Filipe Afonso is an Infantry Commissioned Officer within the Portuguese Army. 

He took part in four tours of duty: two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one in Kosovo, and one in Iraq. Currently, he performs his active-duty operational posting in parallel with lecturing at the Portuguese Armed Forces University Institute. 

He holds a PhD in History by the Nova University of Lisbon, with the thesis “A Guerra cristã na formação de Portugal, 1128-1249 (Christian Warfare during the formation of Portugal, 1128-1249)”. He is an integrated researcher at the Medieval Studies Institute, a founding member of the Iberian Association of Military History, and member of the Study Office on the Saint James Order. His main research areas and interests are medieval military history, military sociology, and war studies.
