Bernardo Vasconcelos e Sousa is Associate Professor at the FCSH-UNL where he coordinated the MA in History (2009-2017). He was President of IEM (2006-2008) and Director of Medievalista OnLine (2007-2008; 2015-2020). 

His publications include Os Pimentéis. Percursos de uma Linhagem da Nobreza Medieval Portuguesa (Séculos XIII-XIV), IN-CM, 2000 (Júlio de Melo Fogaça Prize, of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences), D. Afonso IV (1291-1357), Círculo de Leitores, 2005, and the part on the Middle Ages of História de Portugal dir. by Rui Ramos, 11th ed., D. Quixote, 2021 (D. Dinis Prize 2009, of the Fundação Casa de Mateus). He coordinated the book Ordens Religiosas em Portugal. Das Origens a Trento – Guia Histórico, 3rd ed., Livros Horizonte, 2016 (Almeida Fernandes Prize for Medieval History 2006) and the volume on the Middle Ages of História da Vida Privada em Portugal, dir. by José Mattoso, Círculo de Leitores-Temas e Debates, 2010. Co-edited The Historiography of Medieval Portugal (c. 1950-2010), dir. by José Mattoso, IEM, 2012. Coordinated the part on the Middle Ages of Global History of Portugal, dir. by Carlos Fiolhais, José Eduardo Franco and José Pedro Paiva, Temas e Debates, 2020.  

He was a member of the Board of the Association of History Teachers (1988-1990), Deputy Director of the Portuguese National Archives/Torre do Tombo (1996-1998) and its Director (1998-2001). He was Vice-President of the Higher Council of Archives (2001-2003), Vice-President of the Portuguese Society for Medieval Studies, Corresponding Academic of the Portuguese Academy of History, Corresponding Member of the Navy Academy and Titular Member of the International Academy of Genealogy.
