In this session of the Seminar in Medieval Studies (SEM), a visiting scholar at the Institute of Medieval Studies, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University (IEM-NOVA FCSH), the internationally renowned researcher, David Peterson, will revisit the theme of the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of the 8th century. Deploying arguments of diverse nature, in particular those linked to analysis of documents and toponymy, he proposes a historical reading of a chronological period less known and less well worked by national historiography

Biographical note
David Peterson holds a degree in history from Oxford University and a PhD in medieval history from the University of Burgos. His research focuses on high medieval society in northern Iberia, as seen through the analysis of written documentation and onomastics. He is the author of two monographs on the rural society of the Sierra de la Demanda and the relationship between political boundaries and different ethnolinguistic groups in the Alto Ebro region. The digital edition of the Becerro Gotico de San Millán de la Cogolla, produced as a researcher under contract at the University of the Basque Country, provided the template for the development of a recent reflection on digital publications of medieval documents.
