Session: Missal Acciaiuoli, by Manuel Pedro Ferreira

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum manuscript LA236, also known as the “Missal Acciaiuoli”, is a complex codex, covering the readings and prayers appropriate for Mass celebrated throughout the liturgical year. This was commissioned by a member of the powerful Florentine Acciaiuoli family in around the first quarter of the 16th century for the Carthusian Monastery del Galluzo in Florence, founded by the family, which maintained links with the monastery over generations. The work is profusely illuminated, in the style of the Florentine School, revealing the remarkable ornamental and iconographic wealth subject to analysis in this session.

This session takes place as part of the seminar cycle «Tesouros em Pergaminho – A coleção de manuscritos iluminados ocidentais de Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian» (Treasures in Parchment – The Western Illuminated Manuscript Collection of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian), the result of a partnership between Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM) of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Nova University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH).
