Between 31 May and 1 June 2017, the Institute of Medieval Studies is organizing the International Congress URBISMADĪNA, on the theme “The Representation of the Medieval City in the Iberian Peninsula between XII -XIV centuries”.

This initiative, which will take place in Lisbon, at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon, during May 31st to June 1st, stems from the International Workshops URBISMADĪNA, developed with the purpose of creating a field for the apprehension of the double urban reality of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Middle Ages: the Christian Urbis and the Islamic Madīna and its transfers.

As in these previous meetings, the International Congress URBISMADĪNA constitutes itself as a propitious space for the development of interdisciplinary approaches, which pass through various methodologies of study and analysis. From research perspectives in the areas of History, Archaeology, Literature, Art History, Architecture, Geography, Philology and Philosophy, four thematic axes will be developed: “The historical and narrative image of the medieval city”; “The recovery of the medieval urban landscape”; “The designed city. Urban and architectural representations” and “The city as metaphor: symbolism and idealization”.

This meeting will count with the presence of four renowned international researchers: Pascal Buresi (CNRS-CIHAM-UMR 5648, EHESS, ERC); Beatriz Arizaga Bolumburu (University of Cantabria); Juan Carlos Ruiz Souza (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and the Iraqi artist Hanoos Hanoos.
