The first session of the cycle “Manuscritos de Alcobaça II” will take place on March 9, and will feature lectures by Teresa Lança Ruivo (National Library of Portugal – BNP) and Catarina Fernandes Barreira (Institute of Medieval Studies of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University).

1st Conference:
“Recuperação do passado para uma leitura no futuro – Uma intervenção de conservação. Alcobacense 166″, by Teresa Lança Ruivo (BNP)

The conservation intervention on the manuscript [COLLECTARIO SEGUNDO O RITO CISTERCIENSE] was occasioned by the project of digitization of all manuscripts from the collection of the Alcobaça codices existing in the National Library of Portugal.

The conservation state of Alc. 166 did not allow its digitization because several sections of the book’s body formed blocks as the folios that composed them were glued together. Also, the manuscript’s severe physical deformation and highly fragile areas did not allow for correct visualization of the folios or safe handling. The conservation intervention on the 153 folios that is still ongoing has been focused on a program of curative conservation whose main objective is the physical stabilization of the parchment support so that it can be digitized and thus obtain quality images that allow its reading without recourse to the original.

2nd Conference:
“No coração da liturgia monástica: os colectários de Santa Maria de Alcobaça”, by Catarina Fernandes Barreira (IEM-NOVA FCSH)

The present communication is based on the analysis of four liturgical manuscripts, collections from the scriptorium of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, dated between the end of the 12th century and 1442. We intend to reflect on their content, illuminated decoration, its articulation with the text, and, finally, on the context of production of the four codices.
