The Institute for Medieval Studies of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon and EGEAC (Empresa de Gestão de Equipamentos e Animação Cultural) established in 2014 a scientific and technical cooperation agreement for the research, study and dissemination of the historical and archaeological heritage of the Castelo de São Jorge / Alcáçova of Lisbon, which allowed to create a pioneering program of activities in the national context of the relationship between research units and cultural institutions, as it aims to start from academic research to obtain new knowledge about the castle and Alcáçova of Lisbon that can then be made available to the general public.

The conference Medieval Fortifications – history, conservation and fruition, which is part of this partnership, aims to bring together in the same forum historians, conservation and restoration specialists, cultural managers of monuments and decision-makers in order to share knowledge and create moments of reflection and discussion that can contribute to a better understanding of this type of monument in an integrated vision that allows a more sustained enjoyment by society.
