In the fourth session of the seminar cycle, studies will continue to be presented on family archives, consisting of documents produced, accumulated, and turned into “archives” by various Portuguese and Canary Island family groups. Issues such as the documental and archival practices of the nobility, the possible methodologies for the reconstruction of these archives, and the potential and limits of how the family archives allow us to reformulate our knowledge of the nobility in the Ancient Regime and some important figures in Portuguese and/or Iberian history will be addressed.

This session will have the participation of Alice Gago (IEM-FCSH/NOVA), Judith Gutierrez de Armas (U. La Laguna; CHAM-FCSH/NOVA, UAc), Filipa Lopes (IEM-FCSH/NOVA) and will be moderated by João Figueiroa Rego.
