2nd session of the III Conference Cycle “Manuscritos de Alcobaça – Música e Liturgia”
01.06.2019
Monastery of Alcobaça
Promoted by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage / Monastery of Alcobaça in partnership with the Institute of Medieval Studies, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University, within the context of effectively pursuing the strategic goal of positioning the Monastery of Alcobaça as a centre for the study and dissemination of the history and the spiritual and temporal heritage of the Cistercian Order, this third conference cycle aims to disseminate the most recent research findings about the codices of the Alcobaça Monastery library, now placed in a comparative dimension and contextualised between the local and the global.
As in the previous sessions, this third cycle seeks not only to bring the general public closer to this vast and complex heritage, which was a fundamental part of the identity of the Cistercian monastic community of Alcobaça but also to raise its international profile.
This initiative represents one facet of the research project Cistercian Horizons. To study and characterise a medieval scriptorium and its production. Alcobaça. Local identities and liturgical uniformity in dialogue (PTDC/ART-HIS/29522/2017) and also within the research lines of the IEM given one of its core missions involves the dissemination of research to the most varied publics, research that leaves the academy and, without losing its scientific rigour, is disseminated through promoting the heritage that belongs to all of us but which, for issues related to its fragility and conservation, is less accessible to the public.
The second session of the III Cycle of Conferences on Manuscritos de Alcobaça – Música e Liturgia (Alcobaça Manuscripts – Music and Liturgy), will take place on June 1, from 11am, in the Conclusions Room of the Monastery of Alcobaça. There is free entrance.
