The 2nd session of the 4th Cycle of the international webinar “Dialogues of Art, History and Law” will occur on March 28th.

This Cycle is part of the research project “ManJurEurIt. European Legal Manuscripts on the Move”, to which the research group IUS ILLUMINATUM is linked – an international scientific team composed of historians of medieval art from different European academic institutions, specializing in illuminated legal manuscripts.

Heraldry is a captivating blend of art, history and legal tradition, and we invite you to delve into its rich complexities in our next session entitled “Letters of Grant of Arms: Heraldic Documents Between Art and Law”. This session seeks to illuminate the intricate connections between the artistic representation of heraldic arms and the legal frameworks that have governed their use and meaning throughout history.

Moderator:
– Miguel Metelo de Seixas (IEM-NOVA/FCSH)

Featured presentations:

Grants of Arms by Heralds in England and Wales 1439-1484 – Adrian Ailes (University of Bristol)
Les lettres de concession d’armoiries des rois de France (XIVe-XVIIIe siècle) aux Archives nationales de France – Ghislain Brunel(Archives nationales de France)

This session promises to be a valuable opportunity for scholars and enthusiasts to deepen their understanding of the dual nature of heraldry as an art form and a legal instrument. Participants will be able to interact directly with the speakers during a Q&A session, encouraging an enriching dialogue on the continued relevance of heraldic studies.
