On 22-25 September 2021, to celebrate its third year of existence, the Research Workshop IUS ILLUMINATUM is organising, in collaboration with the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM) of NOVA/FCSH, the Portuguese Institute of Heraldry, the Fondazione Museo del Tesoro del Duomo and Archivio Capitolare di Vercelli (Italy), the Biblioteca Capitolare di Verona (Italy) and the Società Storica Vercellese (Italy), an international Congress entitled: “The Illuminated Legal Manuscript from the Middle Ages to the Digital Age. Forms, Iconographies, Materials, Uses and Cataloguing”. The event aims to communicate to a wider audience the results of the research carried out by team members during the project’s first three years. This Congress also aims to provide an overview of the research developments on illuminated legal manuscripts in Europe, thus bringing together renowned experts in the field and reflecting on the methodological implications and the practical and theoretical challenges that this research entails. During this scientific event, different case studies related to particular regions of the European territory will be analysed through an interdisciplinary approach that overcomes limitations in disciplinary perspectives to open up innovative and fruitful research tracks.

IUS ILLUMINATUM is made up of an international scientific team composed of medieval art historians belonging to different European academic institutions, all specialised in illuminated legal manuscripts. The formation of this research team interlinks with the current research project “ManJurEurIt. Itinerant European Legal Manuscripts” of Maria Alessandra Bilotta, a post-doc researcher under contract at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University and an integrated member of the IEM (Institute of Medieval Studies) at the same University, serving as the coordinator and lead researcher of the team. The project “ManJurEurIt. Itinerant European Legal Manuscripts” aims to investigate the circulation of legal manuscripts in Portugal and the interconnections with the artistic and social mobility ongoing in Mediterranean Europe. The research team aims to complete a comparative study of the artistic, cultural and social currents as conveyed by the production and circulation of illuminated legal manuscripts in medieval Europe. Each team member embarks on study of these phenomena by approaching specific typologies of legal manuscripts within a defined region of Europe. The team will also consider the material aspects of the medieval legal book, with the collaboration of codicologists and archaeologists, thus, analysing the books as archaeological artefacts. Finally, another aim of the team’s work is to help promote and broaden the discussion of these problems by organising scientific meetings and establishing contacts and interdisciplinary collaborations with other research groups and scientific institutions. IUS ILLUMINATUM is headquartered at the IEM (Institute of Medieval Studies) of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University, although members retain their own academic affiliations.
