History
IEM was established as a research unit in 2002 on the basis of the dynamics driven by the FCSH's Scientific Centre for Medieval Studies, which brought together, in the 1990s, most of the researchers from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities who were dedicated to Medieval Studies.
In both the national and international contexts, the IEM benefits from a prestigious heritage, associated above all with its founders - José Mattoso and Luís Krus - and since its foundation has shown a strong identity of its own, multi and interdisciplinary, constituting itself as the only research unit in Portugal exclusively dedicated to Medieval Studies. It brings together different areas of knowledge, which gives it a methodological scope that goes beyond the mere scope of the social and human sciences. Since its foundation, one of IEM's main missions has been to stimulate critical thinking based on these diverse areas of knowledge, to build shared and innovative research.
IEM underwent its first evaluation by the Foundation for Science and Technology in 2007 and obtained a Very Good rating, which it maintained in the following evaluation cycles. In the last evaluation, in 2017-2018, it was rated EXCELLENT, a distinction that crowned the path that began to be mapped out in 2002. For more than twenty years we have been working to create an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to the thousand years of history on which the research of IEM's medievalists is focussed. Here history finds a future. Here knowledge becomes a shared experience.
