IEM accepts individual applications for the 5th Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus
Expressions of interest until 09.02.2022
The 5th edition of the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus is meant for researchers with PhDs that wish to join the work being developed in Portuguese research centers financed by the FCT. The submission period will last from February 3rd to March 3rd 2022 (5 pm. - Lisbon time).
As a Research Unit sponsored by the FCT, the Institute for Medieval Studies (IEM) of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA FCSH) accepts applications of candidates who wish to submit their projects having the IEM as host Institution.
All those interested should contact the IEM-NOVA FCSH, until February 9th, by email, to iem.geral@fcsh.unl.pt, informing the Institute of their intention to apply. Such pre-application to the Institute’s board should be sent with a CV and an initial a draft of the Project they wish to submit, in no more than two pages.
The IEM’s Board of directors will then analyze the applications before accepting to act as host Institution and will notify the candidates of the acceptance or refusal of their proposals. Further to this first acceptance, the applicants will receive feedback on their projects, as well as advice and support for the completion and submission of the research project proposal to the National Funding Board.
The “Concorrer ao Estímulo Individual FCT” workshop will take place on the 25th February. Here, the accepted candidates will have the possibility of attending a session where the general guidelines of successful applications will be revised and where they will present their projects and receive feedback and advice from senior researchers of the IEM with experience in assessing similar projects.
Between January and February NOVA FCSH will host several tuition sessions, among which Grant writing for individual submissions; CIENCIAVITAE; Tips on how to successfully apply to an Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus; Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus guidelines; General topics: Open Science; Gender and Ethics in the applications. These initiatives are open for every IEM candidate, and the mandatory enrollment is available here.

IEM Opens International Call for a Junior Researcher PhD for Digital Editing of Online Sources

The Institute for Medieval Studies (IEM) is currently accepting applications for a post-doctoral post for a Research Fellow (on a contract) to work on Online Digital Edition of Sources, in accordance with the IEM’s Strategic Plan for 2020-2024.
The researcher must have a relevant professional and academic curriculum on Paleography and Diplomatics, combined with experience in editing texts in a digital form, and skills in indexing and web-creation, practice on TEI or any other similar text indexation system, so as to guarantee sufficient autonomy when accomplishing the tasks.

Scholarships for Master’s and Doctoral Degree students on the project “Frontown – Thinking big about small border towns: Alto Alentejo and Leonese Alta Extremadura (13th – 16th centuries)

The project "Frontown – Pensa em grande sobre as pequenas vilas de fronteira: Alto Alentejo e Alta Extremadura leonesa (séculos XIII - XVI)" (Frontown – Thinking big about small border towns: Alto Alentejo and Leonese Alta Estremadura (13th - 16th centuries)) is attributing one scholarship for a master's student and one scholarship for a PhD student.
Applications are open from 1st September to 20th September and complement a scholarship already awarded by the same project.

Postdoctoral Research Grant for the project “Books, rituals and space in a female Cistercian Monastery. Living, reading and praying in Lorvão in the 13th to 16th centuries”

The project Livros, rituais e espaço num Mosteiro Cisterciense feminino. Viver, ler e rezar em Lorvão nos séculos XIII a XVI (Books, rituals and space in a female Cistercian monastery. Living, reading and praying in Lorvão between the 13th and 16th centuries) (PTDC/ART-HIS/0739/2020) was one of the applications approved by FCT in the last tender for projects. This project, based at the Institute of Medieval Studies (NOVA FCSH), has Researcher Catarina Fernandes Barreira as its PI and Professor Conceição Casanova as Co-Pi, and is now launching its first tender for scholarship applications.

Grant for a Master’s Degree under the auspices of the project FALCO

The exploratory project FALCO - Hypothesising Human-Animal Relations in Medieval Portugal (EXPL/HAR-HIS/1135/2021), which began on 1 January 2022, aims to generate an interdisciplinary reflection on human-animal relations in medieval Portugal through the study of falconry in this period.
Applications are open until 23 February 2022 for a non-renewable one-year research scholarship for a Master's Degree student enrolled in a social sciences course. The application terms and conditions can be consulted here, and submissions are sent by email to concursosiem@fcsh.unl.pt referencing "BI1_FALCO Application” as the Subject.

The Institute of Medieval Studies received six Research Initiation Grants (RIGs) integrated into the FCT designed initiative to integrate students who are beginning their scientific activities. Four of the six RIGs were awarded to the project VINCULUM and two to the project FALCO, and with details of all the scholarships available here. Those interested in the initiative may also consult the FCSH website for an overview of these projects and their programs.
The call opens on 29 July before closing on 4 August 2022.

The call for the attribution of 1 (one) Science and Technology Management Fellowship (BGCT), expected to begin in May 2019, in the context of the strategic project of the Institute of Medieval Studies, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University (IEM-NOVA FCSH), is open for the period between 5 and 18 April 2019.
