Filipa Lopes holds a PhD in History with a specialization in Historical Archivistics from the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA FCSH, Portugal) and the École nationale des chartes (Paris, France). Her thesis is centered on the house and the archive of the Viscounts of Vila Nova de Cerveira. Her main areas of study have been the history of pre-modern archival practices and organizations such as aristocratic houses and medieval ecclesiastical institutions.

With funding from the FCT, Fulbright, and Pessoa Programs, Filipa studied at the École nationale des chartes in 2017–2018 and at the University of California–Riverside in 2020.

Apart from her historical research and participation in national and international projects, Filipa also has experience working as an archivist, most notably at the historical archive of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Portugal and the Arquivo de História Social of the Instituto de Ciências Sociais at the Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal). She has also received invitations to teach at the NOVA FCSH (2021–2022) and the Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (Portugal) from 2010 to 2013.

Filipa graduated from the Universidade do Porto (Portugal) with a BA in history and an MA in medieval and Renaissance history.
