Between June 16 and July 10, 2025, the first archaeological campaign of the year will take place under the GAP – Archaeological Project in Guarda, an initiative dedicated to studying settlement patterns from the Iron Age to the Early Medieval period in the Beira Interior region.
The project stems from a scientific collaboration agreement between the Institute for Medieval Studies (NOVA FCSH), the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), the Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut Rome (KNIR), and the Guarda City Council, bringing together researchers of different nationalities and specialties around a common goal: understanding the historical dynamics of the Guarda region.
During this campaign, teams will conduct field surveys and geophysical prospections in different areas of the Guarda municipality, aiming to deepen archaeological and historical knowledge of the region and strengthen strategies for the valorization of local heritage.
The GAP team and the IEM express their gratitude to the Guarda City Council, whose continued support has been essential for the implementation and development of the project’s activities.
