In the 12th and 13th centuries, with the troubadour poetry and the courtly model of Provençal origin, an imaginary of sentimental and intimate contours developed in France, around the theme of love, which would experience continuity in other European contexts, specifically in Italy. The poetic work of Petrarch (1304-1374), innovatively displaying a classical and medieval imaginary marked by sentimental lyricism, would have great influence on later generations. The Canzoniere and Triumphi, manuscript LA129 preserved in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, an illuminated book produced in Florence in the 16th century, bears witness to this. In this seminar, we intend to highlight the literary relevance of this work, as well as the illuminations that accompany it in this codex, as testimonies of a time when text and image interlinked with themes and also allegorical images interpreting a worldview that here comes under observation.

This event takes place in the framework of the seminar cycle «Tesouros em Pergaminho – A coleção de manuscritos iluminados ocidentais de Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian» (Treasures in Parchment – The Western Illuminated Manuscript Collection of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian), resulting from a partnership between Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM) of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Nova University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH).
