The “4th Workshop on Legal Culture – Jurists and the Medieval State 1000-1500: Varieties and the Development of a Symbiotic Relationship” is taking place at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University (Almada Negreiros College) between 7 and 9 September 2022.

This workshop brings together sixteen international specialists in the history of medieval law and politics to engage in shared reflection on the evolution of the roles jurists played within the governmental apparatus as the latter expanded and became progressively more complex between the 11th and 15th centuries. Spanning the intersection of the history of law and political and institutional history, this issue generates fundamental insights into understanding how public sovereign authority was defined, exercised and imposed, how political thought and the practice of power were articulated in a period which sees the foundation of the basic institutional and conceptual structures of the pre-modern state.
