António Rei, Senior Researcher at IEM / NOVA FCSH (NT – DL 57 / 2016 / CP1453 / CT0072), participated in the shooting of the film ‘The Poet King / O Poeta Rei’. The film is a vision, ranging between the historical and the fictional, about the life of Abu l-Qasim Muhammad ibn ‘Abbad al-Mu’tamid bi’llah, better known only as al-Mu’tamid (Beja, 1039 – Agmat, 1095). Born in Beja, he was governor of Silves in his youth on behalf of his father, whom he later replaced as King of Seville. A pleasant youth, spent between the Arade and the Guadalquivir, before a Sevillian maturing through a remarkable reign, with territorial expansion, military and diplomatic victories and a cultural court of reference. A tragic end of life, with defeats, family deaths, exile, humiliation and his own death while imprisoned. His poetry reflects one of the main sources about his person and his whole life in which, among other themes, he relates and underlines pleasure and pain.
