Medievalista is a online journal of medieval studies founded in 2005 by Professor Luís Krus and, since then, it has been published in open acess by the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM).
It publishes two issues a year and accepts original, innovative and multidisciplinary works in all scientific areas related to the medieval period. The publication of the journal seeks to create an international space for sharing and debating ideas, open to everyone, from established authors to young researchers.
This issue of Medievalista brings another thematic dossier, coordinated by three guest editors—Amandine Le Roux, Esther Tello Hernández, and Mário Farelo—focusing on ecclesiastical taxation, a relatively recent but growing field of study. With a primarily southern scope, spanning from the Iberian Peninsula to Sicily and Rome, it examines apostolic taxation (the better-known system) while also exploring how Church revenues were used to benefit royal and even seigneurial powers, as in the case of the tithe.
Particular attention is given to tax agents, record-keeping, and accounting books, as well as the slow evolution of fiscal systems, which constantly faced resistance and required ongoing negotiation among all involved parties.
This issue also features other highlights, including standout articles by Hilário Franco Júnior and Arsénio Dacosta—one on medieval conceptions of space and time, the other on the imagined geographies of the Iberian nobility’s literate culture.
