Call for papers | X International Conference on the Middle Ages
Submission of proposals until April 30
The Institute for Medieval Studies (NOVA FCSH), in collaboration with Castelo de Vide City Council, is pleased to announce the X International Conference on the Middle Ages, which will take place between the 2nd and 4th of October 2025.
This year, the theme “Memory in medieval urban Europe” is dedicated to encouraging interdisciplinary research focusing on Christian, Islamic, and Jewish contributions to the urban landscape of medieval Europe.
Therefore, researchers from different areas – including History, Archaeology, History of Art and Literature – are invited to send proposals for individual sessions and presentations. The Conference aims to explore a wide range of topics through the following themed panels:
- The written memory of cities: charters, cartularies, administrative documentation, letters and chronicles
- The stone memories of cities: buildings, tumuli, sculpture and epigraphy
- Collective memory and individual memory
- Urban memory in representations: cartography, drawing and painting
- The producers of memory: notaries, clerks and illuminators
- Places where memory is produced
- Places where memory is preserved: urban archives
- Urban chancelleries
- Writing: formation and practices
- The construction/destruction of written memory in the medieval period
- The construction/destruction of the memory of medieval towns in the following centuries
- The uses of memory by powers and agents
- The uses of memory by elites
- Between text and stone: the memories of Medieval Castelo de Vide
The Conference will comprise 4 plenary sessions featuring researchers invited by the organizing committee, along with separate thematic panels. Each panel will be made up of three paper presentations and will be 60 minutes long. Researchers wishing to participate are requested to submit proposals for whole panels and/or individual papers, which the organizing committee will arrange into coherent panels. The ConferenceConference includes a complete cultural program with guided tours, a Conference Dinner, and a public Book Launch to present the published volume, bringing together articles gathered from the IX International Conference on the Middle Ages and the Autumn School of October 2024.
In addition to the academic and scientific sessions, the Conference includes an enriching cultural program with guided tours, a conference dinner and a public launch where the collected volume of selected articles from the previous IX International Conference on the Middle Ages and the October 2024 Autumn School.

Conference Fees:
– Speakers (general): €70
– University students (undergraduates, MA and PhD): €50
– IEM integrated researchers and students at NOVA FCSH: €40
Transport:
The organizing committee will provide free transport between Lisbon Airport – Castelo de Vide – Lisbon Airport.
Note: Participants’ registration includes transport between Lisbon Airport-Castelo de Vide-Lisbon Airport, lunch during the scientific sessions, a guided tour of the Historic Center of Castelo de Vide and the Jornadas Dinner.
