It is with profound sorrow that IEM announces the passing of Professor Denis Menjot, a cherished member of the Institute’s External Evaluation Committee and the Scientific Committee of the International Conferences on the Middle Ages of Castelo de Vide. His absence leaves a void in our academic community that will be deeply felt.
A renowned specialist in the study of medieval Iberian cities in their socio-economic, fiscal, and political aspects, he was professor emeritus at the Lumière-Lyon 2 University, having been president of the Société Française d’Histoire Urbaine and the European Association for Urban History, institutions of which he was a founding member. His vast published work includes numerous reference books and articles for all those who study the medieval city, as he could share an integrative view that was not confined to his preferred study space – the Iberian cities – as he always inserted them into a broader and more problematic European whole.
IEM had the privilege of counting on Professor Denis Menjot in many of its activities and of benefiting from the knowledge of a demanding academic who, without paternalism or condescension, promoted collaborative research and knew how to unite, with extreme delicacy and great enthusiasm, researchers from different generations. Particularly interested in the training of young researchers, he participated several times in the Autumn School for master’s and doctoral students in Castelo de Vide. At the IEM CAE, Professor Denis Menjot was a determining element as he provided the most pertinent criticisms and crucial work suggestions for IEM.
