Taught by Professors João Luís FontesAna Cláudia Silveira, Ana Patrícia Alho, Gonçalo Miguel da Silva, José Marcelino Castanheira, Renato Neves, Rodrigo Dias and R. Bruno Matos, the NOVA – FCSH summer school course, “Patrimónios da Água: Olhares cruzados sobre a gestão de recursos hídricos nos séculos XIV-XVI” (Water Heritage: Crossed perspectives on the management of water resources in the XIV-XVI centuries) (25h), will take place between the 30th of August and the 9th of September, at the following times:

  • August 30th and 31st and September 1st, 4th, 5th and 7th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
  • September 6th and 8th from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm
  • September 9th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Course objectives:

  • Recognize the relevance of water resources management in shaping rural and urban landscapes in the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity;
  • Identify the main urban facilities related to hydraulic supply and management;
  • Integrate the management of water resources with technical and economic development in the period considered and with the affirmation of practices and social representations;
  • Raising awareness of the importance of safeguarding historical and heritage testimonies associated with water management;
  • Promote a multidisciplinary perspective in the study of the theme addressed;
  • Master methodologies of selection and analysis of medieval sources that enable the student to prepare teaching materials.
