Lectured by Professors Maria de Lurdes Rosa and Catarina Tibúrcio, the NOVA – FCSH summer school courseIntrodução à Codicologia” (Introduction to Codicology) (25h), will take place between July 4th and September 5th, at the following times:

  • July 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 18th, 20th, 25th and 27th
  • August 22, 24, 29 and 31 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am
  • September 5th, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am

Course objectives:

  • Know the historical evolution of the concept of codicology and codicology as a scientific discipline;
  • Identify the constituents of a medieval codex (nomenclature);
  • Understand the difference between leather and parchment and know the respective transformation processes, from the origin to the final product;
  • Recognize the types of medieval binding;
  • Recognize the types of notebook construction and skin folding that can give rise to notebooks;
  • Knowing other ways of building notebooks;
  • Identify the arithmetic calculations that are at the base of the page layout;
  • Know the chipping process and materials used;
  • Understand to what extent perforation can give us information about ways to make a medieval codex;
  • Know the different materials used in justification and regulation;
  • Understand the extent to which justification and rules can give us information about the ways of making a medieval codex;
  • Recognize the basic signature models and understand how the notebooks were organized;
  • Identify the types of complaints and understand how the organization of notebooks served;
  • Know the typical decorative species of the 15th century and their functions within the codex.
