Taught by Professor António Rei, the NOVA – FCSH summer school course, “Heranças árabes na cultura portuguesa – realidades medievais, ecos contemporâneos” (Arab heritage in Portuguese culture – medieval realities, contemporary echoes) (25h), will take place between the 3rd and 12th of July, at the following times:

Day 3 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 12th from 10 am to 1 pm

Course objectives:

  • Approach, analyze, and disseminate a significant part of Portuguese culture, which is the repository of names, formats, and contents from multiple al-Andalus, in its realities of social, cultural, and religious coexistence.
  • Making translations between an aspect of greater erudition and a more popular record, including, in the diachrony of History, protagonists and contributions of a more literary nature (literature, poetry, mysticism, science…), or more archaeological and architectural (Mudéjar, neo-Arabic …), or with a more anthropological profile (gastronomy, customs, and traditions …).
  • Identify forms of survival and mutation of cultural heritage between medieval and contemporary times.

  • Pre-Islamic Visigothic society;
  • Andalusian society – particularities and interculturalities.
  • Specifics of Garb;
  • Human geography: – Human groups (origins, cultures, and religions…);
  • Language features (phonetics, vocabulary, toponymy…);
  • The Earth (the cities and their regions; their specificities, their people and their memories); Coimbra, Idanha, Santarém Lisbon; Évora; Alcácer, Beja, Mértola; Faro, Tavira Silves, Aljezur;
  • The Sea (interrelation; the journey, the fear, and the mystique;
  • Memories in the kitchen and in the pharmacy;
  • Contemporary echoes, between evocations and new social realities.
