The launch of the first full translation of Fernão Lopes’ chronicles into English took place on October 19th at the Monastery of Batalha, a work coordinated by Institute of Medieval Studies researcher Amélia P. Hutchinson and Teresa Amado.

Amélia P. Hutchinson, a researcher at our Institute with a distinguished academic career in England and the United States, gave an interview to Diário de Notícias (October 19) in which she explained the importance of this, the first full translation of Fernão Lopes’ chronicles. He explains that this is a translation that has long been desired by several international researchers who will now finally be able to quote directly from this work of great historical value. The translation, which took 12 years to complete, retains its medieval linguistic stamp in English, which is one of the project’s main objectives.

Amélia P. Hutchinson also says that new readers will be able to conclude that they “will discover that Fernão Lopes is one of the greatest chroniclers of Western Europe, along with the best-known people of the time who wrote about this period, who are Pedro López de Ayala, in Castile, and Jean Froissart, in French.”
