Exhibition “Contemporary Interventions in Memory: Dialogues”
25.09.2019 - 03.10.2019
Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa
Composed of works in different artistic languages, the exhibition Contemporary Interventions in Memory: Dialogues and Silence opens to the public on 25 September at the Faculty of Fine Arts, the University of Lisbon.
Curated by Catarina Marques da Silva and Tatiana Engelbrecht, the exhibition takes place within the context of the international conference Intervening in Memory. Modern era restorations of medieval funereal monuments (15th-20th centuries), organised by the Institute of Medieval Studies and the History of Art Institute of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University, in conjunction with the Centre of Fine Arts Research and Studies of the Faculty of Fine Arts, the University of Lisbon, which takes place between 25th and 26th September.
Contemporary Interventions in Memory: Dialogues and Silence results from a Call for Works launched to students at the Faculty of Fine Arts (painting, sculpture, multimedia art and photography) by the Conference Scientific and Organising Committee stemming from a hitherto unknown proposal that aims to establish an idealised bridge between teaching and research, between specialists and artists in training, between the Academy and Art. The exhibition brings together installations, paintings and photographs by Ana Galvão, Ânia Pais, Bárbara Jasmins, Joana Sequeira, Liliana Ferreira, Manuel Ferreira, Ruben Lança and Salomé Lopes, who dialogue among themselves and propose a contemporary approach to the conference theme, seeking to stimulate reflection on medieval tomb art and its legacy as artistic heritage.
“The aim of the exhibition is to extend the debate around the relevance of medieval tomb heritage and the impact of the interventions to which it has been subjected over time,” explains Catarina Marques da Silva. “These are provocative works, which instigate reflection on themes such as finitude, eternity, memory, abstraction and materiality.
