The Moralia in Job by Gregory the Great was one of the most widely copied biblical commentaries in the Middle Ages. It is an exegetical work on the Book of Job, offered to Leander of Seville in 583. The fragments M79A and M79B kept at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, were part of a remarkable illuminated manuscript from the second half of the 12th century, which is said to have been produced between northeastern France and Flanders. In this seminar, we intend to highlight the importance of the text, the iconographic program, and the artistic quality of the illumination, relating them with other contemporary manuscripts.

This session takes place as part of the cycle of seminars «Tesouros em Pergaminho – A coleção de manuscritos iluminados ocidentais de Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian» (Treasures in Parchment – The Western Illuminated Manuscript Collection of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian), the result of a partnership between Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM) of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University (NOVA FCSH).
