LA222, known as the Gradual of Admont, is a complex codex, executed for the Austrian Benedictine monastery from which it takes its name in around the third quarter of the 13th century, probably by a follower of the Paduan master Giovanni Gaibana. The first part contains the gradual, followed by the sacramentary which opens with the Canon of the Mass. This work, with many interesting motifs, especially the musical notation of the gradual, is of extraordinary splendour for its abundance and ornamental and iconographic richness and for the technical refinement that reflects the Venetian-Paduan school. The set of illuminations opening the sacramentary are particularly significant in recalling the most ancient traditions of ornamentation in the Canon.
