The Seminar “Representações, imaginário e experiências Atlânticas. Séculos V-XVI” (Representations, imaginary and Atlantic experiences. 5th-16th Centuries), organized by the researcher Kevin R. Wittmann, will take place on November 24th, at Colégio Almada Negreiros, Lisbon, at 9:00 am, in the SD room (floor 0).

The Atlantic Ocean has had an undeniable importance in the historical processes of humanity. From a natural, geographic, cultural, historical, and mental point of view, among other aspects, this has played a determining role in the relationships between societies and cultures over time. Although this role has been widely discussed, its analysis still presents great opportunities for study from different perspectives. This seminar will analyze, in a transversal way, the imaginary of the Atlantic in the times before its definitive knowledge in the 16th century. The images and descriptions of this ocean will be reflected in a comprehensive and interrelated way, taking as a source views from travel literature to heraldry, through cartography and cultural history.
