The book launch by José Augusto C. F. Oliveira, O Foral da Portagem de Lisboa. Estudo introdutório e transcrição, will occur on September 27th, at 6 pm, in the Sala Ogival of Castelo de S. Jorge, in Lisbon, in a joint edition of the Institute of Medieval Studies and Edições Colibri.
Granted by D. Fernando between 1375 and 1377, the O Foral da Portagem de Lisboa constitutes an invaluable testimony to the city’s commercial movement, cited by a myriad of works on medieval Lisbon, or even by studies on a national scale, from most times, from extracts edited by João M. Silva Marques (Descobrimentos Portugueses Documentos para a sua história), in the now distant year of 1944. The economic information bequeathed by a document that is not only of interest to the history of taxation but also opens paths for other approaches, ranging from the political and social sphere to aspects of material culture.
The comprehensive nature of this book, which includes a complete edition and an in-depth study of its contents, is now available. The presentation and analysis of the surviving testimonies, the production of the original document, and the clarification of the object and tax criteria of a diploma are all part of this comprehensive study. The transcription of the O Foral da Portagem de Lisboa is also accompanied by a very useful index and an extensive bibliography.
The presentation will be in charge of Prof. Doctor Luís Miguel Duarte. It will take place within the scope of the Days of the Middle Ages initiative, promoted by IEM in collaboration with EGEAC and Lisbon City Council.
