The International Congress Forais Medievais Peninsulares (séculos XII a XV): uma abordagem histórica e linguística will be held on the 29th and 30th of November 2023. It is organized by IEM as part of its collaboration in the iForal project, coordinated by Filipa Roldão and Joan Serafim. The meeting, which will take place in person, will feature some of the best specialists in this area on the Peninsula and will occur at Colégio Almada Negreiros (room 209, 2nd floor). Attendance is free, but subject to prior registration, via email: iem.geral@fcsh.unl.pt

The iForal project is developing a critical digital edition of charter letters granted by Portuguese monarchs to urban communities, throughout the 12th and 13th centuries, as well as their Latin and vernacular testimonies produced up to the end of the 15th century. The project team intends to identify and understand the nature of these documents and the circumstances of historical and linguistic production, circulation, and transmission of their texts, through the inquiries and methodologies of the historian, the philologist, and the linguist.

The international congress intends to extend the project’s questionnaire to the geographic, political, and linguistic space of the other peninsular kingdoms, in the medieval period, seeking to promote an update of the knowledge that exists today about charter letters at the peninsular scale, and, therefore, a perspective compared with the case of the kingdom of Portugal. The congress will bring together experts in the areas of History, Law, Philology, Linguistics and Text Editing, with a view to an interdisciplinary reflection on the following topics:

  • Historical and legal nature
  • Physical and material characterization
  • Stakeholders
  • Lexical characterization and linguistic variation
  • Broadcast and editing
