The crisis of 1383-85 and the emergence of the Avis Dynasty mark a fundamental moment for understanding the Portugal of the 14th and 15th centuries.

The Open Course “No tempo de D. João I” (In the time of King João I) aims to provide trainees with updated and well-founded perspectives on the main protagonist of this pivotal time – King João I – across his multiple aspects, that is, as master of a military order, as great military chief and as founder of a new dynasty based on his family.

Simultaneously, we intend to establish a reflection on key factors for his affirmation as king, from his connections to the city of Lisbon to the legends that he tried to gather and place in service of the crown.

No less important is the analysis of the construction of the memory of this monarch, his family and his dynasty, which was particularly sustained by producing chronicles and constructing the Monastery of Batalha, and that played and still plays a central role in the imagery of contemporary Portuguese society.
