IEM presents the Blended Intensive Program (B.I.P.) “Unveiling Medieval Monastic Dynamics. Traditional and digital approaches for landscape, architecture, heritage”, in partnership with the University of Évora, the Politecnico di Torino, the Università di Pavia and The Cyprus Institute, which will take place in Montemor-o-Novo, during September. This course aims to develop a didactic approach to studying religious landscapes to understand their diachronic evolution since the Middle Ages and their past and current values.

IEM has 5 places available, free of charge, for NOVA FCSH students, undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, in the areas of History, Medieval History and Archeology, organized by Rolando Volzone, IEM researcher.

Registration is free, but the participants will bear the costs related to travel, accommodation, and food.

Candidates who are members of IEM will be entitled to transport and accommodation in Montemor-o-Novo (meals not included).

Registration must be completed by July 19th via email at rvolzone@fcsh.unl.pt, and it must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae and motivation letter (1 A4 sheet).

The course will provide participants with knowledge and skills that will allow them to understand a historical landscape through theoretical classes and practical activities, combining interdisciplinary methodologies such as traditional and digital technologies, namely:

  • Laser Scanning and Aerial Photogrammetry;
  • Laser Scanning and Terrestrial Photogrammetry;
  • Georadar surveys.

The selected case study is the Nossa Senhora da Saudação convent in Montemor-o-Novo, in the Alentejo region (southern Portugal).

This course will allow the application of an interdisciplinary approach, adding:

  • Medieval history and architecture (IEM-NOVA FCSH – Portugal).
  • Landscape Architecture and ecology (University of Évora – Portugal).
  • Architectural heritage (Politecnico di Torino).
  • Engineering and computer science (Università di Pavia – Italy).
  • Archeology and digital humanities (The Cyprus Institute – Cyprus).
