Open Course: “IT Literacy for Research in History

What is IT literacy and how does this apply to the field of history research? There is no reason to remain in the dark and this provides the opportunity to encounter a new field of knowledge and its set of methods that assist in more easily preparing the way for research work in History.

This course will therefore introduce you to a new way of relating to the materials of History, centred on the concept of “information” and on the development of skills to achieve and control it, and correspondingly producing an appropriate research plan, both as regards primary sources and the support bibliography.

In terms of its target audience, this course primarily aims at undergraduate students (History and others), as well as MA and PhD students seeking to fill gaps in their skills. It also reaches out to all those involved in historical research, whether amateur or otherwise, who wish to accelerate and systematise their research preparation.

The course is divided into two modules. The first module, Literacia Informacional – conceitos e competências (IT Literacy – concepts and skills), presents the main concepts, models and skills for IT literacy and information behaviour essential for research through stimulating and strengthening the domains of digital literacy and digital skills, involving the creative application of digital technologies and the evaluation of research strategies, bibliometric and impact evaluation practices.

The second module, Literacia informacional para a investigação em HistóriaI” (Information Literacy for Research in History), deals with archival information and teaches how to carry out autonomous research in the archives, understanding the specific ways archivists deploy to describe materials. This, therefore, contains theoretical and practical components and ending with the trainees developing their own ‘document description tools’.

The course is divided into 8 two-hour sessions. In each session the contents will be presented by the respective lecturers for approximately 90 minutes with the remaining time given over to debate.
